Wheels and Feet Share the Street

On October 16, 2016, Bardstown Road was closed down for the annual CycLOUvia event. The event stops all car traffic from where Bardstown Road meets Baxter Avenue to The Douglas Loop to promote walking and biking. This CycLOUvia was the Tom Owens' CycLOUvia, in honor of retiring Metro Councilman Tom Owen. The event also promotes local businesses. Sarah Longazel, an employee of Carmichaels Kids, said, "It is a boom to the business, but not as much as Bardstown Road-A-Glow." Many businesses were out on the street advertising, including Revolution Development Cycling, a youth cycling team. Marty Ford from Revo Devo, as the team is known, had brought a bicycle pump out for people to use, and was recruiting more members. Many people were excited about the road closing, even if it was only for one day. Tina Hudson-Merideth says, "I like how open the street is. I think that there should be a bike/walk lane that is always open on Bardstown Road." CycLOUvia is also a welcome break for kids who can't bike all the time, because of traffic in their neighborhoods. Allison Lieberfeund said, " It's a wonderful event, especially since my daughter can't really bike a lot in the Cherokee Triangle, where we live." Other people were simply out to enjoy the event, like Sherri Cornell who loves it and wishes, “it is was like this all the time."
